Il nucleo originario della Chiesa di S. Giovanni Battista della Strada con annesso convento risale a data antecedente all’anno 1124, in questa data infatti il complesso religioso fu donato dall’allora signore di Avellino, il Conte normanno Rainulfo, a S. Guglielmo da Vercelli, Abate di Montevergine.
L’attuale complesso religioso più noto agli avellinesi come “Monserrato”, almeno come impostazione risale all’anno 1614 e si deve alla generosità della famiglia dei principi Caracciolo, signori di Avellino, che nel corso del loro governo della città hanno provveduto ad abbellire il complesso religioso con pregevoli opere d’arte.
Nel 1728 commissionario allo scultore napoletano Cristoforo Battinelli il maestoso altare maggiore realizzato in marmi policromi, e nel 1730 al pittore salernitano Angelo Michele Ricciardi (1672-1753) la preziosa tela raffigurante S. Giovanni Battista.

ST JOHN THE BAPTIST’S CHURCH AND S.MARY’S FROM MONSERRATO CONVENT
The original nucleus of St. John the Baptist’s Church of the road with the adjoining convent dating back to a date before the year 1124, on this date, in fact, the religious complex was donated by the ancient ruler of Avellino the norman Count Rainulfo to S. William from Vercelli, Abbot of Montevergine. The current religious complex known to Avellinesi as "Montserrat", at least like planning, it goes back to the year 1614 and it is due to the generosity of the family of Caracciolo princes, lords of Avellino, in the course of their city government have taken measures to beautify the religious complex with valuable works of art. In 1728 the majestic altar made of polychrome marble was commissioned to the neapolitan sculptor Christopher Battinelli and in 1730 to the salernitano painter Michael Angelo Ricciardi (1672-1753) the valuable painting representing S. John the Baptist.
